Woodlawn Preschool
...a plan for the future.

More than 50 years ago, Woodlawn Nursery was founded by the American Association of University Women in response to a lack of preschool education in Battle Creek area.

Woodlawn is no longer identified as a nursery, a term now used to define daycare facilities where children, often as young as infants, are cared for all day. There are more than 25 names in the area yellow pages under the classification "Schools, Academic, Preschool & Kindergarten." Since no separate listing for nursery or daycare facilities exists, all these categories are lumped together. There is, however, a vast difference between a nursery, a daycare center and a preschool. Woodlawn youngsters attend classes for 2 and a half hours in the morning or afternoon, two, three or four days a week. Ages range from 2 and a half to 6 and classes are designed to develop positive school experiences and an enthusiasm toward learning. A 5-day program for 5 years-olds was added in 2002.

From an initial enrollment of twenty in 1951, Woodlawn's enrollment is currently 160.

Woodlawn rarely advertises; yet, each year there is a waiting list of children whose parents have heard about Woodlawn's preschool programs from other parents. Word-of-mouth advertising has turned Woodlawn into one of the most sought-after preschools in the area.
